Mr Vishal Pai has undertaken training in the United Kingdom and the United States to expand his levels of expertise. Vishal brings his wealth of training, and his constantly updated evidence-based knowledge, to improve the function of his patient’s knee.
His passion for sports knee injuries, including complex ligament reconstruction, saw Vishal move to the United Kingdom to complete his sub-specialist training, and he completed two knee fellowships. The first was at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, specialising in patellofemoral stabilisation, revision knee replacement and partial knee replacement surgery. The second was in sports knee surgery at the Fortius Clinic in London, working with Mr Andrew Williams, an international expert in the field. It was here that he furthered his expertise in primary and revision ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament knee reconstruction and complex meniscal repair. Vishal worked with many elite athletes at the Fortius Clinic and knows what’s involved in getting an athlete safely back into competition. It’s not just the operative techniques and rehabilitation, but also includes psychology and decision-making.
Vishal handled both paediatric and adult fractures and other musculoskeletal injuries during his time at The Austin Hospital as the lead orthopaedic trauma surgeon in 2018. He is still involved on the orthopaedic trauma oncall roster and performs surgery for fractures at Box Hill Hospital.
Vishal was awarded six months of training in paediatric orthopaedics at Shriners Hospital for Children, in Portland, in the United States. He found it very rewarding looking after children with knee injuries so they could get back to the sports they love. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in a growing child is very different from in an adult.
Vishal believes in supporting the next generation of doctors and his work at Eastern Health gives him that opportunity. He’s also a senior lecturer for medical students at Monash University and supervises trainee orthopaedic surgeons. With his inquiring mind, Vishal is involved in clinical research. He’s also published in several international journals and has presented his research nationally and internationally. He knows how important it is to keep up to date with the latest evidence-based orthopaedic information.
Vishal can see patient's quickly at the Avenue consulting suites or in the Harcourt consulting suites, Hawthorn.
