Waverley Private Hospital would like to introduce Dr Daniel Chiu, a specialist ophthalmologist with further training in retinal surgery. Daniel graduated with high distinction in Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1992. After being awarded the Cedric Cohen gold medal of excellence and ARVO Travelling Scholarship for the RANZCO Part 1 Ophthalmology examination, he undertook training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.

In 2000, he gained his RANZCO Fellow qualification with the KG Howsam gold medal award of excellence and entered fellowship training in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery at the RVEEH. This was followed by further retinal surgery training in the United Kingdom at the Oxford Eye Hospital.

In 2002, he entered private practice in the subspecialty field of medical and surgical retinal diseases and serves as a visiting consultant at the Vitreoretinal Unit at the RVEEH and currently honorary consultant at Monash Hospital. He has also a particular interest in complex retinal detachment, paediatric surgical retinal diseases, posterior ocular trauma surgery, complex combined anterior and posterior segment surgery and transcleral posterior chamber intraocular lens placement.

Daniel has published and co-authored several research articles in local and international ophthalmology journals and continues his enthusiastic involvement in teaching and training of junior ophthalmology registrars and international vitreoretinal fellows.
Having migrated from Hong Kong at an early age, Daniel remains fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese, allowing him to provide a wider scope of retinal services to his patients and referrers.
