HOSPITAL NEWS Honouring Historic Ties 2016 marks 80 years of medicine for the University of Queensland (UQ) and Ramsay Health Care helped the University celebrate this achievement at its Greenslopes Private Hospital campus which has had a 46 year partnership with Greenslopes Private Hospital since 1970. Medical Dean of UQ’s School of Medicine, Professor Darrell Crawford, said medical teaching at Greenslopes represented “the most successful University/Private Hospital partnership in medical education and medical research in Australia.” The collaboration began when UQ first established its Departments of Medicine and Surgery at the Greenslopes campus. “In 2011 we created history together by opening Australia’s only fully-fledged clinical school located in a private hospital, helping to secure the training of hundreds of current and future health professionals,” said UQ Vice Chancellor Peter Høj. Greenslopes Clinical School is a training ground for both undergraduates and postgraduates, and can have 120 students attending at any one time. A well-deserved award was presented to Emeritus Professor Richard Gordon who founded UQ’s Department of Medicine at Greenslopes in 1970. The plaque was created in recognition of fostering excellence in teaching, research and clinical care. Professor Gordon is also internationally renowned for his hypertension research, which identified hormonal causes of high blood pressure. Ramsay Health Care CEO, Christopher Rex, said the relationship between Greenslopes Private Hospital and UQ is as important today as it was during the hospital’s privatisation in 1995, and is only going to become more significant in the future.
