The Ramsay Way 2016 | 04 11 HOSPITAL NEWS Warringal offers prostate artery embolisation Warringal Private Hospital can now undertake Prostate Artery Embolisation after successfully completing the training and its first procedure performed by interventional radiologist Dr Dinesh Ranatunga under the guidance of a team from Liverpool Hospital in NSW. This procedure requires a very high end Angiography machine with the most up to date software capable of fusion imaging and rotational angiography in order to perform this case successfully and safely. It is performed on patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia with lower urinary tract obstructive symptoms resulting in a poor quality of life. Traditionally, this condition has been treated pharmacologically - in mild cases - but surgically when symptoms progress. The surgical procedure of transurethral resection of the Prostate (TURP) or open prostatectomy, requires a lengthy stay in hospital, prolonged recovery and can have serious side effects. However, this minimally invasive procedure can be offered as an alternative in some patients and requires an overnight admission to hospital only, and no urinary catheterisation. The patient has only a small puncture wound in the radial or common femoral artery. This means the patient can be ambulant within 3 to 4 hours post procedure. It can be performed under intravenous sedation and local anaesthetic only and as a day case.
