Greenslopes Private Hospital urogynaecologist, Professor Judith Goh
AO, has been named the Australian Medical Association's Woman in
Medicine for 2018.
Prof Goh has spent about three months every year for 23 years training
doctors in third world countries.
AMA President Dr Michael Gannon said Prof Goh's nominators described
her career as both humbling and inspirational.
“To carry out her work within a dedicated team of professionals,
Professor Goh often has to brave political unrest, and perform surgery in
challenging environments, as well as deal with the emotional and social
injuries to her patients due to war, rape, domestic violence, poverty,
shame, and grief," Dr Gannon said.
“Her work has changed lives for the better for hundreds of affected
women, correcting their often long-standing and preventable obstetric
trauma, including vesico-vaginal and recto-vaginal fistulae, with the
minimum of overhead costs to maximise the reach of her services."

ACHIEVEMENTS
TRISH HOGAN has been appointed
to the position of CEO Subang Jaya
Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
For the past 10 years, Trish has been
the CEO for Pindara, Short Street Day
Surgery and Pindara Day Procedure
Centre. During Trish’s leadership, Pindara
has been transformed into a major
healthcare facility for the Gold Coast,
providing a much broader and complex
range of services. The hospital has seen
a number of developments including
new theatres, the day endoscopy unit,
Specialist Medical Centre, the David
Lindsay Wing, expanded Emergency
Department and multistorey car parking.
Last year, Trish’s role expanded to take on
the old Allamanda facility and transform it
into the newly refurbished The Southport
Private Hospital, expanding rehabilitation
services and introducing private mental
health services.
Trish has also forged strong links with
universities and commenced onsite
clinical trials and research, and has been
a lead ICHOM site for lower back pain.
OBSTETRICIAN WINS PRESTIGIOUS
TEACHING AWARD
An obstetrician at Greenslopes Private
Hospital has won a prestigious award for
volunteering his time and expertise to
support and teach medical students.
Head of Obstetrics, Dr Brad Armstrong,
was selected from more than 100 nominees
to receive the Award for Excellence in
Clinical Teaching and received the John
Pearn Medallion from The University of
Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine.
Dr Armstrong was chosen from an
impressive shortlist of winners from clinical
schools across the region, including the
Royal Brisbane, Mater, Ipswich, Northside,
Sunshine Coast, Princess Alexandra, Uniting
Care and rural sites.
Student comments included that Dr
Armstrong was “an excellent role model” and
taught about “clinical reasoning and proper
bedside manner as well as the importance of
continuing to treat patients with respect.”
EXCELLENCE IN BEREAVEMENT CARE
A bereavement midwife from Frances Perry
House has been recognised for her exceptional
contribution to the profession at the Australian
College of Midwives Annual Awards.
Eliza Strauss won the Excellence in Bereavement
Care category, judged by Sands Australia’s General
Manager, Anita Guyett.
She was nominated by Dr Renée Miller, Principal
Clinical Psychologist at the Antenatal & Postnatal
Psychology Network.
“Eliza’s commitment to supporting bereaved
parents and training midwives in caring for
bereaved families goes a long way in helping
people through the trauma of loss,” Dr Miller said.
“I am truly humbled and so chuffed to receive this
award,” said Eliza. “Thank you to ACM and Sands
for the recognition.”
