The theatres, equipped with the latest technology along with a new day of surgery admission centre, were officially opened in August. The project represents a $6 million investment by Ramsay Health Care in the Port Macquarie Private facility and follows on from the opening of the new rehabilitation development incorporating a hydrotherapy pool last year. Port Macquarie Private CEO Connie Porter said the project would benefit patients and doctors. “The new theatres are more efficient, more ergonomic and more technologically advanced,” Connie said. “Our hospital provides state-of-the-art facilities for the whole patient journey. From the theatres through to the ward setting and rehabilitation. “It means our community has access to a comprehensive private service right here in Port Macquarie.” Lyne MP Dr David Gillespie and Ramsay Health Care Managing Director Chris Rex were on hand to officially open the new facility. ■ W E S T M E A D WESTMEAD PRIVATE IMPLANTS IMPLANTABLE DEFIBRILLATOR Westmead Private Hospital was among the first hospitals in Australia to treat their patients by implanting the Boston Scientific S-ICD™ System, the world’s first and only implantable heart defibrillator system that is placed under the skin, without any direct contact to the heart. This new evolution in defibrillation therapy provides protection for patients who are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The S-ICD™ System is designed to provide the same defibrillation protection as a traditional transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) however, the advantage of the S-ICD™ System is it sits entirely just below the skin and uses a lead implanted along the bottom of the rib cage and breastbone. The lead is placed under the skin rather than through a vein into the heart, leaving the heart and blood vessels untouched and providing a new and exciting solution for both physicians and patients that is less invasive with less risk. To date, more than 12,000 devices have been implanted in patients around the world. H O L LY WO O D HOLLYWOOD CARDIOLOGIST RECOGNISED BY THE LANCET Professor Rukshen Weerasooryia, a cardiologist at Hollywood Private Hospital, was recently involved in conducting a research trial into pulmonary vein ablation involving Hollywood patients. This seminal atrial fibrillation trial in which Hollywood was instrumental has been rewarded by publication and acknowledgement as third author in The Lancet Medical Journal, one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world. The research focused on identifying potential improvements to the current ablation technique by trying to induce the abnormal conduction on purpose using a drug (adenosine). This was done to see whether further ablation in those individuals who had a tendency to get the abnormal conduction with adenosine would benefit them in terms of keeping them paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) free. Hollywood CEO, Peter Mott said the research is an important addition to the knowledge base of the treatment of PAF to which the hospital is proud to have contributed. A special thanks to Terry Bayliss, the angiography suite team, Professor Weerasooryia’s electrophysiology team and the Hollywood Executive.
