Greenslopes Private Hospital Volunteer Services had an inspiring start to 2013 with volunteers being recognised by their community for various Australia Day Awards. Volunteers Dawn Scott, Bernice Finlayson and Rudi Kedde were honoured to receive the 2013 Griffith Award from Kevin Rudd MP, for their volunteering at the hospital. Wendy Hinkley also from Greenslopes, received a Lord Mayors Achievement Australia Day Award. Wendy volunteers her time at the hospital as a Care volunteer and as a member of the War Widows Guild. These awards pay tribute to the special people in Brisbane city who have gone above and beyond their civic duty to help improve the lives of others. Wendy received her award at an award ceremony with Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk. While koalas are often seen in the leafy surrounds of John Flynn Private Hospital, a koala sporting speedos is a bit out of the ordinary. Officially titled by Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary “Does my bum look big in this?”, this large fibreglass koala has been donated to John Flynn Private to raise the awareness of the plight of hundreds of koalas killed or injured every year on the Gold Coast. There are 22 of these koalas all over the Gold Coast in different attire. John Flynn Private Hospital supports the koala hospital at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
