Carmela, who was recently awarded 40 years of service with Ramsay, has personally overseen the delivery more than 6 million meals during her lifetime,  working first at Kogarah Private Hospital which  later amalgamated with Pacific Private and Bexley Private to form St George Private Hospital in 1995. So what’s it like working on the frontline of one of Sydney’s busiest private hospitals? “We have 92 catering staff; we deliver 600 meals a day; and we go through 560 loaves of bread and 30 cases of orange juice a week,” says St George Private Catering Manager Peter Flanagan. “Carmela is a valuable member of our team and works hard to coordinate staff and ensure the seamless delivery of our food and beverages as well as overseeing multiple hospital functions every week. Congratulations Carmela on a job well done. Gerard was the Occupational Therapy Manager at Donvale for over 10 years and a passionate advocate for occupational therapy making a significant contribution both to the hospital and to professional OT associations in Victoria. After completing an MBA and Ramsay Future Leaders course, Gerard became CEO of the hospital and his inclusive and progressive leadership style was the perfect fit for Donvale which is known for having an excellent staff culture. Under his leadership the hospital moved from strength to strength and has achieved amazing results in patient outcomes; patient satisfaction and accreditation as well as completing a recent major expansion of the hospital. Above all, Gerard was also a very caring individual and had a genuine interest in everyone around him. He will be greatly missed by the hospital community. The attending Kennedy family and friends were thrilled and proud at this staff-initiated acknowledgment of Gerard’s contribution to Donvale. Several family members flew in for the event from interstate. New hospital CEO Jenny Haig said naming the ward in Gerard’s honour was a further step towards recovery for many of the staff. “It provides acknowledgement that Gerard was such an important part of the Donvale family and that we must maintain the culture that he had developed here so well,” Jenny said. She said the presence of Ramsay Health Care Executives including Danny Sims was appreciated by all staff and guests. “Danny spoke warmly and sincerely of Gerard and his perseverance in gaining support for the development and seeing it through to completion.” Staff were involved in the planning of the day, which culminated in a brilliantly colourful balloon release and then a gathering for refreshments. The vibrant conversation and mingling of all guests together ensured the celebratory nature of the event. Family and friends were presented with a book of tributes and photographs created by staff in loving memory of Gerard.
