The new services feature state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pools both built with contributions from the federal government through its 2012 regional Health and Hospitals Fund and thereby provide local residents with much needed additions to the existing services at both Dudley and Port Macquarie Private Hospitals. In addition to the new pools, Port Macquarie Private also opened new accommodation and both hospitals extended their gymnasiums and multipurpose rooms. Dudley Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer Trevor Matheson said the pool was a much needed addition to the existing rehabilitation services at Dudley, providing local people with a high quality rehabilitation option and preventing the need for them to travel to Sydney for this service. “This new development will also assist Dudley Private Hospital to meet the ever-increasing demand for rehabilitation services in Orange and surrounding regions,” Mr Matheson said. “Many of our rehabilitation patients have had surgery with us and are then referred to the rehabilitation unit. However, some patients have had surgery out of the area and then return to Orange where they can undergo their rehabilitation either as part of the day program or admitted for a period, allowing them to be close to home and family.” In addition to the hydrotherapy pool construction, both hospitals are also undergoing construction to their theatres. CAIRNS PRIVATE HOSPITAL IS SET TO GROW TO 140 BEDS NEXT YEAR, FOLLOWING A DECISION BY RAMSAY HEALTH CARE RECENTLY TO COMMENCE A MAJOR EXPANSION OF THE HOSPITAL. The $16 million development will see a further 56 private patient rooms added in a new tower block to be built on Abbott Street which will include all new modern and spacious private rooms with ensuites. With increasing demand for surgery, a new operating theatre is planned, bringing the total number of theatres at Cairns Private to seven. Rehabilitation services will also expand at the hospital with plans for a comprehensive dedicated 25 bed inpatient ward plus rooms for day patient programs and a gymnasium. A new dedicated cardiac ward is also planned for the hospital. Cairns Private Hospital CEO Shane Mitchell said the announcement was welcomed by staff and doctors of the hospital and patients would reap the benefits. “Cairns Private Hospital has established a strong reputation in the region for the provision of excellent surgical day case and complex surgical care. This new development will allow us to further enhance the excellent care we already offer. He said Ramsay’s ongoing investment in increased bed and theatre capacity at this hospital would provide the necessary infrastructure to better service the growing healthcare needs of the Cairns and surrounding community. The development will also bring jobs to the community both during the construction phase and after commissioning. It is expected that a further 75 staff will be required across all disciplines of the hospital including nursing, allied health, catering, cleaning and administration. “We are very pleased to be investing in a project that will inject funds into the local economy and create jobs for the region. It will also play an important role in attracting new specialists and other specialist clinical staff to the region. This new major development will follow a series of service redevelopments which will assist in meeting the growing demand for services from the community including the opening of the hospital’s new renal unit, a 21 chair unit which will be formally opened in December 2014, and renovations to the hospital foyer, maternity and day chemotherapy units which will commence shortly. Construction is expected to commence in February 2015 with a 12 month construction timeframe leading to completion of the development in February 2016.
