RAMSAY AUSTRALIA CEO REPORT It is not very often that Ramsay Health Care opens a brand new hospital and so it was very special to witness Wollongong Private Hospital’s first day of operations on 18 January and then its official opening on 19 February. This 151-bed private hospital will deliver a new level of private hospital care in state-of- the-art facilities for the people of Wollongong and the surrounding Illawarra district. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, management and doctors of the new Wollongong Private Hospital for your efforts to ensure the smooth opening of this fantastic facility. Since its opening, the hospital has exceeded our expectations – an indication of the extraordinary efforts that everyone has gone to and the urgent need in the region for this expanded facility. There has been a lot of conjecture in the media lately about slowing hospital utilisation. I am pleased to report that admissions in Ramsay facilities have remained strong across the board in the first six months of fiscal year 2016 and we have continued this good form with a strong start to this calendar year. Ramsay is in the fortunate position of having invested heavily in our facilities over the past decade to ensure that that they are of a suitable size and standard to meet the demands of a growing and ageing population. We expect over the next 20 years to see the impact of the baby boomers as they enter the 70 plus age bracket and anticipate a greater need for hospital care from this ageing demographic. To this end, we have a number of new developments opening and under construction which are reported in this issue of The Ramsay Way. I am looking forward to the new developments opening at several of our major hospitals in 2016, including St George, North Shore and Peninsula Private Hospitals. The extensions at these premium metropolitan facilities include more beds, theatres and an emergency centre at Peninsula Private Hospital. This issue of The Ramsay Way reveals the progress at North Shore Private Hospital which is due to open later this year. Our new Chief Operating Officer Kate Munnings has hit the ground running and is doing an excellent job getting around the organisation and engaging with hospitals and staff. I have had some really genuine feedback about Kate and how she fits in to our organisation and our culture. I hope that you all get to meet Kate in the coming months as she tours around our organisation. I am also extremely pleased that Professor John Horvath AO has commenced with Ramsay Health Care and has started to work closely with us on our quality and leadership strategies. Wollongong Private Now Open continued from page 1 “Our new Wollongong base is located close to the public hospital which will improve patient flow and enhance relationships with visiting medical officers while our larger site allows us to offer services new to our hospital and which, in some cases, have not previously been available anywhere in the region. “Seeing years of planning and work come to fruition is amazing and we have only just begun our journey.” Wollongong Private Hospital offers nine operating theatres along with a hybrid angiography laboratory, an eight-chair day oncology unit, 10-bed intensive care unit and a six-cot special care nursery. By July the hospital expects to employ about 520 staff and welcome an additional 50 specialists. Its sister site, Figtree Private Hospital, has been transformed into a rehabilitation facility with both inpatient and outpatient programs.
