Our commitment to you

At Ramsay Health Care, your health, safety and comfort are our priority. We believe you and your loved ones should be at the centre of decisions about your care and we work in partnership with you throughout your hospital journey.

That partnership is built on open communication and trust. On this page, you’ll find an overview of how we monitor and report on safety and quality, so you can see the standards we hold ourselves to.

You can also learn more about how we encourage patients to speak up here. If you ever need to raise a concern while you or your loved one is in a Ramsay hospital, find out how to RAISE the Ramsay Rule.

Patient safety and clinical quality framework

At Ramsay Health Care, we are committed to providing safe, high-quality care across all our facilities. Our approach is guided by national standards and evidence-based practices.

A key part of this is creating an environment where potential risks are recognised early and addressed quickly. This is the foundation of the Ramsay Health Care Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Framework.

The framework focuses on five key areas that are vital to achieving safe, reliable and effective care. You can explore each area in the diagram below or download the full Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Framework.

National standards

We place the highest priority on patient safety and continuously review our practices to support safe, high-quality care. We are fully committed to following Australia’s national healthcare standards and reporting practices, including those set out by the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS) and the Private Psychiatric Hospitals Data Reporting and Analysis Service (PPHDRAS). Accreditation assessments are conducted by independent accrediting agencies, approved by the Commission, as part of the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme.  All Ramsay facilities are accredited to the NSQHSS standards.

Our results are publicly available on the Australian Commission Quality and Safety in Health Care website. You can also use the Commission’s Safety in Healthcare Web Tool to find your local hospital’s results.

Clinical quality and safety results

Our clinical quality and safety results show how Ramsay Australia’s hospitals compare with other Australian hospitals (both public and private) across a range of vital health and safety metrics. Learn about some of our key metrics and priority areas below, or visit this page to view all of our clinical quality and safety results.

Key metrics

  • Infection

    OUR RATE (lower is better)

    0.247

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia or blood stream infections are a risk to patients both in the hospitals and the community. Infection prevention and control (IPC) programs are designed to minimise risk of these infections occurring as part of standard precautions and aseptic technique practices. Healthcare facilities actively monitor for SABs as part of the facility's and organisation's infection surveillance programs. Rate is displayed as SAB infections per 10,000 patient days.

  • Patient Falls

    OUR RATE (lower is better)

    0.249

In Australia more than one in three people aged 65 or over fall at least once a year. Harm from a fall can impact wellbeing and lifestyle. Fall-related injury represents the single largest cause of hospital presentations. Rate is displayed as Falls per 100 patient days. We work hard to prevent falls. Our falls rate is low and we continue to apply targeted prevention strategies to maintain this performance.

  • Hand Hygiene

    OUR SCORE (higher is better)

    89.8%

One of the most effective means to prevent infection spreading is for all health professionals and anyone entering our premises to engage in good hand hygiene practice. Our hand hygiene program is aligned with the National Hand Hygiene Initiative (NHHI) and monitors compliance with hand hygiene during patient interactions in all of our Hospitals. Our hand hygiene compliance rate exceeded the national benchmark in Jan–Dec 2024.

    Industry Benchmark

    80%

  • Medication Errors

    OUR RATE (lower is better)

    0.001

Ramsay Health Care takes all medication errors very seriously. All incidents are investigated to improve medication management and reduce the risk of future errors. Rate of medication errors requiring intervention is displayed per 100 patient days. We have a very low rate of medication errors due to the implementation of a range of medication safety strategies.

Clinical registries

Clinical registries are national databases used to track and measure outcomes for specific diseases and/or service areas. This information can be used to monitor and, over time, improve healthcare services.

Ramsay Health Care actively supports many clinical registries, particularly for our priority services. Visit our Clinical Registries information page to find out more.

Australian Hospital Patient Experience Question Set (AHPEQS)

The Australian Hospital Patient Experience Question Set (AHPEQS) was developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) and is endorsed by the Australian Health Minister's Advisory Council. They are the first patient-experience surveys to have been developed in partnership with patients and have been tested for validity with both overnight and day-only patients.

As part of our commitment to clinical quality and safety, Ramsay Health Care has been using the AHPEQS to survey our patients since July 2020.

While the question set contains 12 questions, there is a ‘summary question’ that allows people to give their overall impression of the care that they received:

“Overall, the quality of the treatment and care I received was: Very good, Good, Average, Poor, Very poor.”

The Ramsay Australia average is 97%.

Net Promoter Score (NPS)

We encourage patients to be active partners in their care and we regularly review feedback to help us improve services and patient experience.

For this reason we conduct Net Promoter Score surveys among our patients to understand how well we are meeting expectations, and to identify any areas needing improvement. These surveys are conducted through our private medical surgical facilities in Australia and the results are published quarterly.

The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is an index ranging from -100 to 100 that measures the willingness of customers to recommend a company's products or services to others.

the current Net Promoter Score for National is: 72

What does the survey ask?

Patients are asked: “Based on your recent experience, how likely are you to recommend us to your friends and family?”

Depending on the rating (from 0 to 10), patients are asked to provide more information to explain their experience.

Calculating the Net Promoter Score

Respondents are grouped into three categories:

  • Promoters: a score of 9 to 10.
  • Passive: a score of 7 or 8.
  • Detractors: a score of 0 to 6.

The Net Promoter Score is calculated by subtracting the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters. The final score can range from -100 (if every patient is a Detractor) to 100 (if every patient is a Promoter).

Please note: An asterisk (*) beside the Net Promoter Score indicates fewer than 25 surveys were returned during the reporting period, which reduces statistical relevance.
