Preparing for pregnancy
How long does it take to get pregnant?
If you’re trying to conceive, it’s normal to wonder how long it should take. For couples under 35 in good health, it can take up to a year. A negative test month after month can feel discouraging, but it’s often part of the journey.
-
Over 35: See a fertility specialist after 6 months of trying.
-
Under 35: See a doctor after 12 months without success.
If you have irregular periods or conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), talk to a doctor sooner. For people experiencing secondary infertility (not being able to get pregnant after a first child), seek help after six months.
What do I need to do after a positive pregnancy test?
Once you have a positive result, book an appointment with your GP. They can:
-
arrange early blood tests and ultrasounds
-
provide a referral to an obstetrician
-
discuss your preferred hospital
If you’d like to have your baby at a Ramsay hospital, you’ll need to choose an obstetrician who practises there. After choosing, book an appointment with them and confirm your hospital care.
To avoid missing out, it’s best to make your obstetrician and hospital bookings as early as possible.
Pre-pregnancy screening
Optional pre-pregnancy screening, including genetic carrier tests for conditions like cystic fibrosis, fragile X and spinal muscular atrophy, is often recommended before or early in pregnancy.
Your doctor may recommend specific screenings based on your family history, ethnicity, and age. You can also ask for advice on, or request, any particular screenings you are interested in.
What if I have a pre-existing gynaecological condition?
Managing a pre-existing condition during pregnancy can be challenging. Many Ramsay facilities offer treatments for various gynaecological conditions, including endometriosis, adenomyosis, and cervical or ovarian cancers. If you need advice, support or care, please speak with your obstetrician or a member of your care team.
