Prenatal learning resources
As a Ramsay Health Care maternity patient, you’ll have access to our Antenatal Learning Centre. Filled with resources on pregnancy, labour and birth, postnatal and parenting tips, it will help answer your questions.
Support in the birthing suite
You’re welcome to have a support person during labour, but they cannot assist with clinical care. The midwifery team will decide how many support people are allowed based on your condition, safety and privacy needs. Please read our policy statement: Click the plus sign (+) on the right side of either heading to expand and view more information.
Policy statement
Ramsay Health Care respects the rights of clients giving birth at its facilities to have a support person/s of their choosing.
The support person, including off-duty hospital staff, will not be permitted to become involved in the clinical management or conduct of the labour/birth.
A midwife in private practice accompanying a woman in labour is deemed to be a support person and will not be permitted to become involved in the clinical management or conduct of the labour birth.
Outcome statement
Women giving birth at Ramsay Health Care facilities receive support which meets their emotional and psychological needs during labour and birth.
Procedure
Support person/s who fail to adhere to this policy will be asked to leave the birth suite and, if necessary, be removed from hospital premises.
If the duty person who is acting in a support role is requested by the management to commence paid duties following mutual agreement, the staff member will be required to comply with his/her contract of employment.
The numbers of support persons present in the birth suite will be at the discretion of the midwifery team and treating medical practitioner, taking into account the patient’s clinical condition, safety, privacy and choice.
Filming policies
We know how special this moment is. Still cameras (single-shot) may be used with the care team’s approval.
Professional photographers are allowed in the birthing suite with permission, but not in the operating room.
For safety and privacy reasons, video or sound recording devices are not allowed in the birthing suite, operating theatre, or special care nursery.
Support after discharge
Our support continues even after you go home. A maternal child health nurse will follow up to ensure everything is going well. For any concerns, feel free to contact your midwife.
Your local doctor can also be a helpful resource, and the Australian Breastfeeding Association can provide extra support for breastfeeding.
