Elbow
What causes elbow pain?
We use our hands and arms for many things, so it’s not surprising that the muscles and tendons around our elbow joints can become irritated or injured. Watch this video to learn more about some of the most common elbow conditions and their treatments.
Conditions and services
Ramsay Health Care hospitals offer orthopaedic treatment and support for a range of elbow conditions. Here is a general guide to some of the most common services. Click on the plus sign (+) on the right-hand side of any heading to read more.
Elbow arthroscopy (keyhole surgery)
Elbow arthroscopy is a form of keyhole surgery that can be used to treat a number of conditions and injuries. It is usually performed under general anaesthetic (i.e. while you’re asleep), sometimes with a local anaesthetic ‘nerve block’ as well.
To perform the procedure, your surgeon will typically make several small (5mm) incisions around your elbow. The exact number and location of incisions will depend on the type of surgery you are having.
Your surgeon will use these incisions to insert a camera and their surgical instruments. For better visibility with the camera, they might also run fluid into your shoulder.
Most people take six to eight weeks to recover from elbow arthroscopy. Your surgeon might also recommend a physical rehabilitation program, which we can support you with through Ramsay Health Plus.
Fractures
Most people who fracture their elbow don’t need surgery, but if you have a bad break – and particularly if pieces of bone have broken off or moved out of place – you might need screws, pins or even a bone graft to help your bones heal correctly.
If you do have surgery, your recovery time will depend on the severity of your fracture. You might be able to return to light activities like driving in four to six weeks, while it might be three months or more before you can do any heavy lifting. Physiotherapy can greatly assist your recovery and your orthopaedic care team can help you get started.
