About
Sam Adie graduated with Honours from the University of New South Wales in 2005.
He completed his orthopaedic training in Sydney in 2015 and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
During his training, Sam studied and graduated with three postgraduate UNSW degrees- a Master of Sports Medicine (MSpMed) in 2009, a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2010, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2014 – which was awarded the prestigious Sir Roy McCaughey Research Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a competitive research scholarship from the National Health and Medical Research Council.
Sam is also triple fellowship trained, with further clinical and academic fellowship experience at three eminent centres:
- Hip and knee primary and revision joint replacement
- University of Toronto / St. Michael’s Hospital (Canada) - 2016
- Complex orthopaedic trauma and Oxford Clinical Trials Unit
- University of Oxford / John Radcliffe Hospital (United Kingdom) - 2017
- Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship
- Prince of Wales Hospital (Australia) – 2018
He returned to Sydney in 2017 with appointments at both public and private hospitals at St. George, the Sutherland Shire, and Macquarie University Hospital, where he now performs about 500 cases per year.
In recognition of his achievements, Sam was selected as the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association Young Ambassador, representing Australia in 2018, and Australian Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leader in 2019.
Sam has a clinical interest in:
- Hip and knee joint replacement surgery, routinely using robotic or computer navigation
- Posterior and anterior hip replacement surgery
- Complex orthopaedic trauma surgery (of all regions of the body)
- Lower limb deformity correction
In recognition of his research and academic achievement, Sam was appointed a Professor at the University of New South Wales, one of Australia’s leading universities. He has published over 100 research papers in peer reviewed journals on issues related to his interest - improving joint replacement and other surgical outcomes, and clinical trial methodology. He has won numerous awards for his research with competitive funding of over $12 million and runs a series of clinical trials to improve outcomes after joint replacement and injury. He also lead a number of systematic reviews related to clinical trial methodology in surgery. He is currently supervising research for Masters and PhD students. He is also passionate about teaching junior doctors and trainees and is currently Chair of the “CLEAR” Course, a mandatory evidence-based medicine course run by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for postgraduate surgical trainees.
