Clinical Practice:
Dr Athula Karunanayaka (Karu) treats private patients at Joondalup and Hollywood Private Hospitals and public patients at Joondalup Health Campus. Dr Athula Karu’s expertise involves echocardiography (including stress and transoesophageal echocardiography), perioperative cardiac assessment and management of high-risk perioperative cardiac care and visiting consultant at Royal Perth Hospital.
Background & Training:
Dr Karu graduated medicine with honours (MBBS HONS) from the University of Sydney. He spent a research term at Kings College Hospital, London UK, with further two years of full-time research in vascular medicine at the University of New South Wales and was the recipient of the prestigious Sir Roy McCaughey research fellowship for three years during his research. Dr Karu completed his physician training (FRACP) at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital and then Cardiology Advanced Training at Royal Perth Hospital.
Dr Karu is the Director of Post Graduate Medical Education at Joondalup Health Campus overseeing training of junior doctors and he is a National Senior examiner for Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
