Biography

Emma has devoted almost 20 years to providing oral treatment and preventative education for those with special needs requirements and has been a Registered Special Needs Specialist with the Dental Board of Australia since 2010. Emma furthered her studies in autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disorders and mental illness with a Graduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Developmental Disability) in 2013. Emma remains passionate about helping patients with dental phobia, neuro-degenerative disorders and those who are medically compromised.

Since 2000, Emma has coordinated the largest restorative general anaesthetic waiting list for adults with special needs, liaising with anaesthetists and other medical specialists. Up until 2007, she was privileged to be part of the multidisciplanary management teams in NSW for Oral Motor Function Therapy and Rett Syndrome.

Currently, Emma is a clinical tutor and lecturer in Special Needs Dentistry for the University of Sydney, DMD program. Emma has also published; she is the principle author of a prospective study using pre-set criteria, in the Journal of Disability and Oral Health (2008); and, she co-authored a chapter on Special Needs Dentistry in the Manual of Dental Assisting (2007 edition). In 2002, Emma won Best Clinical Research Paper for a Person Under 36 for a pilot study on treatment planning for people with special needs.

Outside of dentistry, Emma is a loving mother to her son. She always makes herself available for family time and trips, exploring nature and cities around Australia. The art of film-making is another of Emma's hobbies; in fact, she has a Graduate Certificate in Film from UTS, and in 2004, one of her short films was featured in the Sydeny Film Festival.
