About

Dr Jason McMillen is an Australian-trained neurosurgeon with a longstanding commitment to healthcare in Queensland. He graduated from medical school in Queensland and undertook Royal Australasian College of Surgeons specialty neurosurgery training in hospitals around Australia, including Adelaide, Townsville, Melbourne and Brisbane. He completed research into minimally invasive spinal techniques during this period. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in adult and paediatric neurosurgery and spine surgery. After completing his neurosurgical training, he undertook post-fellowship training at Cambridge University Addenbrooke’s Hospital in the United Kingdom, with a focus on cerebrovascular surgery and neurotraumatology.

Since returning from the United Kingdom to his hometown of Brisbane, Dr McMillen has worked as a consultant neurosurgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he previously held the position of Director of Neurosurgery. He assisted with the development of a neurosurgical service at Royal Darwin Hospital. He is involved in the training and supervision of advanced neurosurgical trainees for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has published in scientific journals and international neurosurgery textbooks and remains involved in neurosurgical research and education. Dr McMillen consults at the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre in South Brisbane and conducts clinics at Hillcrest in Rockhampton.

Dr McMillen’s clinical areas of practice include cerebrovascular surgery, including the surgical management of brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and he is credentialled to provide these services at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. His other areas of practice include cranial and spinal neurosurgery, minimally invasive spinal surgery and neuro-oncology. He has experience in brain tumour surgery, including fluorescence-guided brain tumour resection. Along with other surgeons at the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre, Dr McMillen performs minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques and is involved in the training of neurosurgeons from Australia and overseas in these approaches. Dr McMillen is trained in all areas of neurosurgical care, including the management of pain syndromes such as trigeminal neuralgia, hydrocephalus and peripheral nerve conditions.
