About

Dr Karthik Gopal graduated with an MBBS from the Harvard-affiliated Sri Ramachandra University in India, where he was awarded a gold medal for academic excellence. He began his clinical career at the JIPMER Hospital in Pondicherry before migrating to Australia in 2007.

Committed to advancing his medical knowledge, Karthik went on to complete postgraduate degrees in Infection & Immunity (University of Sydney) and Public Health (Western Sydney University) while successfully navigating the Australian Medical Council licensing process.

His Australian medical career commenced at Coffs Harbour Hospital, NSW, followed by a move to Queensland where he joined The Prince Charles Hospital. There, he completed his basic physician training, including a secondment to Rockhampton Hospital. Pursuing his passion for cardiology, Karthik undertook advanced training at both Townsville Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital, achieving Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2018.

Karthik then completed two years of intensive coronary interventional fellowships at The Prince Charles Hospital (2019–2020). During this time, he became highly skilled in primary angioplasty, coronary angiography, intravascular imaging, physiological assessment, right heart catheterisation, and complex coronary interventions.

In recognition of his expertise, Karthik was selected for a coveted structural heart fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts Heart Centre) in London — the UK’s highest-volume quaternary referral centre. There, he further refined his skills in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), other structural heart interventions (including mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valve procedures), and the closure of congenital defects such as ASD, VSD, PDA, and PFO.

Throughout his career, Karthik has maintained an active interest in clinical research, participating as a sub-investigator in multiple trials. His public health training complements this work, providing valuable perspective on population health and preventive care.

A passionate educator, Karthik values teaching in clinical settings and promoting evidence-based practice. He also holds an academic appointment as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland.
