About

Dr Matthew Broadhead is an orthopaedic surgeon consulting at Harbour Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Coffs Harbour and operating at Baringa Private Hospital. His practice has two focuses: hip and knee replacement, and surgery for bone and soft tissue tumours as a member of the Bone & Soft Tissue Sarcoma Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. Joint replacement for Mid North Coast patients is carried out locally in Coffs Harbour.

He graduated in medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2006 and completed his orthopaedic training in Australia and the United States, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He then completed subspecialty fellowships in lower limb reconstruction at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospitals, with further experience in revision joint replacement, limb salvage and tumour surgery through the RPA Bone & Soft Tissue Sarcoma Unit. He has held honorary posts at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, in the United Kingdom.

He performs total hip replacement through both direct anterior and posterior approaches, and total knee replacement with an emphasis on enhanced recovery after surgery, with further training in robotic-assisted knee replacement.

Dr Broadhead was awarded a Master of Surgery (ChM) by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for research on ACL reconstruction, and a Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Melbourne for studies in bone biology and orthopaedic oncology. He is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales and a General Director of the Australian Orthopaedic Association Research Foundation.

Non-surgical options are considered before an operation is recommended. Patients of all ages are seen, and a referral is required.
