About

Dr Nicholas Smith is an Orthopaedic surgeon at Southern Highlands Private Hospital, with interests in Hand and Upper Extremity (including the Elbow and Shoulder) surgery.

Dr Smith received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Sydney, graduating with honours in 1993 and has attended subspecialty training through the Smith and Nephew Ilizarov and Research Fellowship at the New Children’s Hospital in Westmead. In January 2002 he attended a six month Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship with Dr David Duckworth in Sydney. He also attended the International Paediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis Fellowship as well as the International Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship, both at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas Texas, from July 2002 to July 2003.

Areas of interest:

  • less invasive solutions for common hand problems, such as endoscopic carpal tunnel release, needle aponeurotomy for Dupuytren’s contracture, arthroscopic ganglionectomy and minimally invasive and motion preserving treatment of wrist fractures
  • advanced arthroscopic wrist surgery - arthroscopic management of scaphoid fractures and non-unions, arthroscopic scapholunate reconstruction, arthroscopic partial wrist fusion, arthroscopic management of TFCC problems, arthroscopic assisted treatment of radius intra-articular injuries
  • patient focused state of the art treatments for arthritis of the hand, thumb and wrist
  • TFCC tears and instability of the distal radio-ulnar joint
  • nerve surgery, including compressive neuropathies (including carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes), nerve trauma (including neonatal brachial plexus palsy, and reconstruction for adult plexus problems), nerve and tendon transfers in the paralysed extremity.
  • congenital hand differences and other children’s hand and upper limb problems
  • arthroscopic management of elbow problems
  • shoulder instability surgery (arthroscopic Bankart repair and open Latarjet procedure)
