As a former physiotherapist, I recognise the importance of conservative management and consider non-surgical treatment options where appropriate. I work closely with allied health professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, perioperative physicians and rehabilitation teams to support patient care.

Where clinically appropriate, patients are encouraged to mobilise on the day of surgery following joint replacement. Most patients remain in hospital for approximately two nights.

Post-operative review is generally arranged 14-21 days after surgery. Rural patients may be reviewed locally and followed up via telehealth where appropriate. Dissolving sutures are commonly used, allowing dressings to remain in place until review.

GPs are encouraged to contact me if a patient presents with post-operative concerns so that appropriate follow-up can be arranged. Patients are typically reviewed again at 10-12 weeks following joint replacement, with imaging as required. A 12-month review is also undertaken, after which an ongoing follow-up plan is discussed.
