Dr Sam Shales is a skilled Orthopaedic Surgeon with expertise spanning various specialised areas, including sports knee surgery, joint preservation, meniscal and chondral surgery, patellofemoral joint instability, limb reconstruction, hip and knee arthroplasty and trauma care. Sam provides holistic, personalised orthopaedic care with a strong focus on evidence-based treatments and a multi-disciplinary approach to recovery. Focus areas include Sports orthopaedics, Paediatric and adult limb reconstruction, Joint preservation and instability, Arthroplasty and trauma management. His approach is patient-centred, integrating the latest research and techniques to optimise outcomes. He has extensive experience treating elite athletes from teams such as the Brisbane Lions (AFL), Brisbane Broncos (NRL), Redcliffe Dolphins (NRL), Queensland Reds (Super Rugby), and Queensland Firebirds (Netball).
Background & Training
Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Sam completed his medical education at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle, earning degrees in BBioMedSc and MBBS. His training includes fellowships at Queensland Children’s Hospital and Brisbane Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Centre (BOSMC). He has also trained internationally at Shriners Hospital for Children, Portland, Oregon and BC Kids, Vancouver, Canada.

Sam is a member of Australian Orthopaedic Association, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society. He remains actively engaged with ongoing research and advancements in orthopaedic care.
