About
Simon Fleming is an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in hand and wrist surgery, medical education and workplace culture. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS), and holds additional qualifications in medical education.
He has a clinical focus on complex trauma, as well as the management of arthritis, Dupuytren’s disease and other challenging conditions of the hand and wrist. Within Central Queensland, he has introduced thumb replacements for arthritis, as well as offering “outpatient” or “in office” treatments for many common hand conditions. He is currently the Medical Education Chair for Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service, as well as sitting on a number of committees, including the Major Trauma Committee and the Orthopaedic Clinical Advisory Group.
Dr Fleming is a founding member of the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance (IODA) and serves on the Executive Board of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers. He is a past Associate Editor for Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher, and is a current member of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Surgery. His work focuses on surgical education, assessment, professionalism, workforce sustainability and training culture.
Dr Fleming has held a number of national leadership roles, including Vice Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Trainee Doctors’ Group, President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association, and membership of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and British Orthopaedic Association Councils.
Dr Fleming has delivered over 250 invited keynote lectures internationally, presenting his award-winning work on diversity and inclusion, improving surgical training, and challenging toxic and exclusionary cultures in healthcare. He works with individuals, institutions, and healthcare organisations to support cultural change, leadership development, and the capacity to engage in difficult but necessary conversations about power, behaviour, and accountability in medicine.
In his spare time, he travels, cooks/eats great food and spends time with his family. Not always in that order.
