About
Clinical Practice
Professor Greg Cunningham is an orthopaedic spinal surgeon with dual orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal fellowship training, allowing him to manage the full breadth of spinal conditions, from routine cases to the most complex or revision situations requiring a second opinion. He specialises in cervical spine surgery, keyhole/endoscopic discectomy, motion-preserving disc replacement, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, and robotic-assisted 3D-navigated spinal surgery. His practice places strong emphasis on rapid recovery, tailored treatment planning, and the use of advanced spinal technologies to optimise outcomes, particularly for athletes and patients requiring high-precision surgical intervention.
Background and Training
Raised in Western Australia and a graduate of the University of Western Australia, Professor Cunningham completed seven years of orthopaedic surgical training across Queensland and WA before practising as a general orthopaedic surgeon managing trauma, sporting injuries, joint replacement, and upper-limb conditions. He later undertook two years of prestigious international fellowship training in both neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal surgery at globally recognised centres, including
- Oxford University Hospital (complex paediatric and minimally invasive degenerative spine care),
- The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London (Europe’s largest spinal deformity centre),
- The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square London (complex neurosurgical spine).
These fellowships provided him with exceptionally broad exposure to complex deformity, degenerative disease, paediatric conditions, and innovative motion-preserving techniques.
Research and Teaching
Professor Cunningham is the Director of Spinal Surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital’s Orthopaedic Department, where he contributes extensively to surgical training and education for clinicians specialising in orthopaedics and spine. He lectures in spinal and orthopaedic surgery across all three WA medical schools and is an Associate Clinical Professor at Curtin University. His research involvement includes multiple international collaborations with centres such as Oxford University Hospital, University College London, and The University of Western Australia, focusing on advancing spinal technology, improving clinical outcomes, and developing next-generation surgical implants and minimally invasive techniques. He has been a key contributor to the early introduction and development of robotic spinal surgery, first as part of the pioneering surgical teams in the UK and later in bringing and evolving this technology in Perth.
Places of Work
Professor Cunningham holds a senior public position as Director of Spinal Surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he leads service delivery and surgical training initiatives. He also consults privately at the Neurospine Institute in Perth and operates across multiple major private hospitals in Perth, including Hollywood Private Hospital.
