About

Dr Grace Chew is a Breast Laparoscopic & General Surgeon, who specialised in breast cancer treatment and research. She was awarded a NHMRC scholarship (2011–13) for post-graduate research into mammographic density (MD) cell biology at the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. Dr Chew performs breast oncoplastic surgery at Northpark, Warringal, Cotham, and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals, as well as Austin Health and Northern Health. She presents complex patients to weekly Breast Multidisciplinary Meetings, and collaborates with experienced plastic surgeons to perform immediate breast reconstruction.

Dr Chew has published and presented original research investigating high mammographic density as a strong risk factor for breast cancer at an international level (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), and at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Congress (2012). Together with Prof K. Polyak (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, USA) and Prof I. Haviv (Bar Ilan University, Israel), she has contributed to research into parity-associated changes on MD.

As an epidemiologist (M. Epi. (Melb)), she performed a meta-analysis of prophylactic-oophorectomy for breast and ovarian cancer prevention in high-risk BRCA1/2 mutation carriers (European Cancer Conference, Barcelona, 2007). Her academic appointments include Senior Lecturer at Austin Health (2012-) and Northern Health (2010-), and Lecturer at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (2011-2013). Dr Chew is committed to excellence in patient care, practice of evidence-based surgery, and validation of novel therapies in breast cancer surgery and research.
