Ramsay Hospital Research Foundation has partnered with the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) founded by University of Queensland to celebrate and showcase research undertaken in Ramsay Health Care facilities.

This competition is only open to PhD students enrolled in Australian universities and challenges PhD students to present their PhD research in 3 minutes using 1 static slide.

Ramsay Research Month 3MT competition is a virtual competition run nationally across Australia. The winners of this competition will not progress to the National 3MT competition or the Asia Pacific finals. Entrants who wish to compete in these competitions must enter via their own universities.

Opening and Closing Dates

The competition will open on Monday 25 July.

Closing Date: Entries must be submitted by 11:55pm AEST Sunday 4 September 2022.

Eligibility

An entrant must be

  1. currently enrolled* in an Australian University as PhD candidate, and
  2. be undertaking their PhD research in a Ramsay Health Care facility

Entrants can include Ramsay Health Care employees, Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) or PhD candidates whose research occurred in a Ramsay Health Care facility.

*For this year only (2022), PhD graduates who have graduated between January 2022 – June 2022 and who meet the other eligibility criteria will also be eligible.

Prizes

We will award 2 x $500 prizes in the form of vouchers (no cash prizes). There will be a People’s Choice awarded via a popular vote and the overall Winner awarded by a judging panel convened by RHRF using the 3MT criteria: https://threeminutethesis.uq.edu.au/resources/judging-criteria-and-panel.

The Competition

The competition will be run as a virtual format (video submission) and hosted online by the Ramsay Hospital Research Foundation.

Participants will be required to submit a video of no more than 3 minutes (or 180 seconds) complying with the 3MT virtual completion guidelines and rules, available here:

The competition will be run nationally with only one round. There will be two prizes, a People’s Choice and an Overall Winner Both will be acknowledged in Ramsay Hospital Research Foundation and Ramsay Health Care marketing materials but will not move onto subsequent 3MT competitions.

How to enter

Applicants will be asked to complete an online application form and provide the YouTube link.

Your 3MT video must be uploaded to YouTube on either a public or ‘Unlisted’ video link. Please do not submit links to ‘Private’ YouTube videos as we will not be able to access the video and applicants will need to include this link in your application.

Only one entry per eligible person.

Additional Competition Information

Each eligible 3MT presentation will be assessed by a judging panel convened by RHRF using the 3MT criteria:

Chance plays no part in determining the Prize winners.

All eligible 3MT presentations will also be entered into the People’s Choice competition. Each entry will be given a unique number so voters are able to select their favourite presentation from a voting menu.

Voting for the People’s Choice winner will open to Ramsay Health Care staff and the public and will be one vote per person.

Voting will be open between Monday 12 September and close at 5pm AEST on 23 September 2022 via https://www.ramsayhealth.com.au/Ramsay-Research

The winners of the Ramsay Research Month 3MT competition and the People’s Choice competition will be contacted via email and will be publicly announced on 30 September 2022 during the final Ramsay Research Month webinar.

The winners will also be acknowledged in RHRF and RHC marketing materials, social media and announced in the October version of the RHRF e-newsletter.

Can I use my 3MT video I used for my university competition? Yes, as long as it meets the 3MT virtual completion guidelines and rules set out here:

I am a Honours student, can I enter this competition? No, the 3MT is only open to currently enrolled PhD students.

Any personal data relating to the winners, or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current Australian data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.

This competition is a ‘game of skill’ and will be judged as described above.
