Lake Macquarie Private Hospital has become
the first site in Australia to benefit from the use
of a new prostate biopsy imaging system.
The bkFusion system fuses real-time ultrasound images
with pre-exam MRI data to help accurately target lesions,
potentially reducing the risk of missing high-grade tumours.
This advancement in visualisation assists the urologist in
guiding the biopsy needle during prostate biopsies; the
images can also be easily communicated to radiology
departments.
Urologists Dr Paul Ainsworth, Dr Peter Chong and
Dr Martin White have already been trained in the use
of the bkFusion system at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital.
Dr Chong said the technology “allows radiologists to mark
areas of concern and these areas can then be translated
to ultrasound images. The urologist can then target areas
of interest in the prostate.”
Transperineal biopsy is the gold standard and has been
shown to reduce infection risk, while also reducing the
chance of repeat biopsies.
Continued advances in ultrasound technology help
urologists to offer high-quality treatment plans to
their patients.

theatres of the future
Leading edge technology is being introduced at Hollywood Private
Hospital to help surgeons better distinguish between ligaments,
muscles, tissues and other minute structures in the body.
With four times the resolution currently used in most
operating theatres in Australia, Hollywood’s new $20 million
fully integrated ultra-high definition operating theatres will
provide more detailed images.
The new technology will give surgeons and their theatre
teams increased diagnostic confidence, as well as greater
precision and accuracy, enhancing patient safety.
Hollywood Chief Executive Officer, Peter Mott, said the
hospital’s expanded operating theatre complex takes the
total number of theatres at Hollywood from 16 to 20 and
makes it the largest private theatre complex in Western
Australia and one of the largest in the country.
Mr Mott said Hollywood had doubled its surgical capacity in
just four years, and is the largest private hospital in WA by
bed numbers.
“While it’s great to be the biggest, what matters the most
is the quality of service we provide to the 75,000 West
Australians who entrust
their care to us
every year.”
Hollywood Ear, Nose
and Throat surgeon, Dr Steve Rodrigues, said
the ultra-high definition technology had many
advantages.
“This new technology results in an unmatched
degree of precision allowing for improved
efficiency and safety,” he said. “The imaging
is much more advanced and means the whole
team can see more detailed images from pretty
much anywhere in the operating theatre,”
Dr Rodrigues said.
Dr Rodrigues said the benefits in terms
of communication, education and overall
efficiency could not be underestimated.
Since opening its doors in 2013, the number of visiting
medical officers onsite has increased from three to 10.
The 34 bed facility provides specialised inpatient and
day patient mental health programs including anxiety,
depression relapse prevention, and Dialectical Behaviour
Therapy programs.
Macarthur Clinic is currently undergoing an exciting
expansion to accommodate the needs of the region's
growing population.
Northside Group CEO Anne Mortimer said, “The expansion
will transform the clinic into a 48 bed facility, with all single
private rooms, and is the only mental health facility in the
Macarthur area.”
“Construction is moving along rapidly and we are excited to
see the new wing is beginning to take shape.”
The clinic has been designed to encapsulate the vision
of providing an innovative, holistic treatment centre that
caters to the specific needs of people suffering from mental
health disorders as well as those in the community who are
committed to their mental health and wellness.
The clinic offers the Northside Group Four Pillar Program
to Health and Recovery which has been successful in
rehabilitating thousands of patients since its launch, by
focusing on a patient’s psychological, physical, nutritional
and social health.
“This outstanding facility embodies the latest thinking in
program delivery, therapy and nutrition and supports an
approach to health by offering a well-rounded program
addressing medical, psychological and counselling,
psychosocial, recreational, physical and diversional
interventions,” Ms Mortimer said.
