For registered nurse Lauren Williamson, one of the most rewarding parts of working as a new graduate in theatre recovery is being the first person there when patients wake up to provide care and reassurance.
“I enjoy the faster pace and quick thinking needed in the post-anesthesia care unit. No patient or day is ever the same. You also have some very interesting chats at times!” said Lauren.
Lauren started working at Port Macquarie Private Hospital in July 2021, as an enrolled nurse on the rehabilitation ward.
Her experiences while on nursing placements were so positive that when she heard about the Graduate Pathways Program and was encouraged to apply, it was an easy decision to make.
“I learnt a lot from my mentors, enjoyed all of my placements and found everyone to be super welcoming and supportive,” said Lauren.
“Coming from a nursing background knowing little about the PACU/theatre environment, the experience so far has been great. I have an amazing mentor, excellent team and have learnt so much from them all.”
When asked what it is that drew her to working at Ramsay, she credits the professional development opportunities.
“Ramsay appealed to me because of the support and encouragement to pursue my career in the area I was interested in, with future opportunities to study further and advance my career.
“At the moment I am enjoying my graduate year and new learning experiences and in future I will consider completing a post graduate degree and aiming for a clinical nurse specialist role.”
Lauren was in the August 2022 intake of the Ramsay Health Care Graduate Pathways Program. For more information about this program, click here.
