NSW

My name is Chris and I’ve worked at Wollongong Private for just over 5 years.

Describe your job without using a position title?

My role is varied and ever changing, no two days are ever the same. The main focus of my day is centered on creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our patients, staff and visitors. My role usually brings lots of competing interests and challenges and I enjoy balancing these across the organisation. It also enables me to be involved in all areas of the Hospital which helps to keep it varied and interesting.

What motivates you and why?

I have always enjoyed being someone that people rely on to get a job done. Given the ever-changing requirements of infection control, especially over the last year my main motivator is trying to always get the right advice, to the right person, at the right time, in a way that’s useful and manageable.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Fly a helicopter.

What does the Year of Health and Care Workers mean to you?

The healthcare profession is like no other, everyone will come into contact with it at some point in their lives, often in the worst situations. If 2020 and now 2021 has taught us anything it’s the value of having a stable, committed and well-resourced healthcare workforce. To that end, recognising the amazing people who work within it is essential in keeping us together and motivated to continue, regardless of what challenges are thrown at us. I feel privileged to work in this profession and to be a part of such a great team.

What would you say to inspire future generations of workers in health care?

I would say that if you want a challenging and meaningful role that will stretch you in all kinds of ways (some you never imagined existed) then healthcare is for you. I have done a few different roles in the past, but none have come close in terms of opportunities to progress and the level of satisfaction you can gain.
