My name is Sam Shanahan and I’ve worked at Ramsay Head Office Legal for 6 ½ years.
Describe your job without using a position title?
I provide advice to the Ramsay Health Care Australia business in relation to legal risk, clinical incidents, medical malpractice claims, complaints, doctor matters, privacy and data breach.
What motivates you and why?
I am motivated by my family who are the most important thing in my world and the driving force behind everything that I do. Second to that are my personal values of integrity, justice and dependability which are at the core of both my personal and professional life and guide my authentic self.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Something achievable - I would like to learn yoga or meditation as I am not great at switching off and would hope that this would teach me a little (provided I actually practised it!). Something fanciful – I would like to learn amazing patisserie and chocolate tempering skills so I could make incredible desserts for friends and family.
What does the Year of Health and Care Workers mean to you?
It is an opportunity to recognise the extraordinary achievements and commitment of everyone who works to deliver health care, both this past 18 months and always. Health Care Workers truly are the unsung heroes of our community who function in the most challenging of circumstances and yet remain selfless, compassionate, committed, and unwavering in their drive to deliver care to others. I am privileged to work amongst so many fine examples at Ramsay at both Hospital and Corporate level.
What would you say to inspire future generations of workers in health care?
Health Care is not just comprised of the front line clinical workers; it is an industry with diverse clinical and non-clinical work opportunities and all contribute to the successful delivery of excellent health care services and play an active role in delivering People Caring for People.
