My name is Jay and I’ve worked at Ramsay Pharmacy Melbourne CBD for over 3.5 years.

Describe your job without using a position title?

I am a friendly pharmacist, providing a good range of community pharmacy services such as dispensing, counselling, immunising, and webster-packing in Melbourne CBD. I greatly enjoy working with our team and serving a very diverse group of customers.

What motivates you and why?

The feeling that I have after assisting our customers to enable them to have better quality of life is rewarding. I can sense their appreciation when they experience my genuine efforts to comprehend their particular issues and improve their condition. I like these moments in my workplace.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I’d like to learn how to pay the cello or violin. Their sound magically calms me when I feel stressed or emotional.

What does the Year of Health and Care Workers mean to you?

I’ve learnt that the year 2021 has been unanimously designated by the World Health Assembly as the International Year of Health and Care Workers (YHCWs) in recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of the millions of health and care workers at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was shocked and saddened to learn that the International Council of Nurses (ICN) estimated that at least 1,500 nurses have died since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The real figure is likely to be much higher as the relevant data was only collected from 44 of the world’s 195 countries. It’s believed COVID-19 health worker fatalities worldwide could actually surpass 20,000. I greatly respect their brave sacrifice and contribution to saving one more life.

What would you say to inspire future generations of workers in health care?

Remember any time when you or any of your loved ones were very ill- the enormous gratitude you felt for anyone in health care, who was there to look after you or your loved ones. It is an immensely rewarding profession.
