Dr Karl Poon is a consultant Cardiologist with an interest interventional cardiology, structural heart disease intervention such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation, MitraClip, and other interventions such as ASD/PFO/PDA closure.
Dr Poon graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2001 and trained at Royal Melbourne Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital prior to a two-year interventional cardiology fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. He then became a senior interventional fellow in 2012 at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan USA with exposure to complex structural interventions in TAVI, MitraClip and LAAO. He returned in 2013 and had since been a senior staff specialist at the Prince Charles Hospital.
Dr Poon is one of the most experienced TAVI implanters in Australia, a proctor for the Edwards transcatheter heart valve and has helped many Australasian centres establish new TAVI programs. He has performed several first-in-Australia/region procedures including the first Sentinel embolic protection device, transeptal MVinMAC and BASILICA in a TAVI. He has served as chair and faculty member at cardiology meetings nationally and internationally such as LondonValves, TokyoValves, ChinaValves, EuroPCR and ACC.
He is passionate about ongoing research with the Queensland Heart Institute, is a senior lecturer at University of Queensland and currently serves as site primary investigator for several international TAVI/Sentinel studies.
