Dr Shum graduated from the University of Queensland and trained at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital.  He is a Geriatrician.  Dr Shum’s primary practice is at Greenslopes Private Hospital and he also has visiting rights at Sunnybank Private Hospital, Belmont Private Hospital as well as a staff specialist position with Queensland Health at QEII Jubilee Hospital.

Dr Shum has interests in the diagnosis and management of dementia and perioperative assessment in older persons.  He is also interested in the promotion of healthy ageing through lifestyle advice and has conducted research in the management of frailty in older persons.  During his training, he has developed a keen interest in the maintenance of dignity in older hospitalised patients and considers good ongoing communication with caregivers and family to be an essential part of his practice.  In addition to English, he is also fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.  Dr Shum wishes to expand his scope of practice to include telehealth as well as domiciliary visits to private residences as well as residential aged care facilities in the near future.
