Assoc. Professor Greg Cunningham has completed both orthopaedic and neurosurgery spinal fellowship training. He has experience in treating spinal problems including more complex issues and those requiring a second opinion. Greg is passionate about delivering a tailored approach to spinal care, offering treatments that promote rapid recovery and return to activities. He utilises advanced techniques in spinal surgery, including motion-preserving disc replacements, minimal access or key-hole surgery, and computer-assisted 3D navigated surgery. He has been at the forefront of advancements in spinal technology, including being part of the team that first introduced robotic spinal surgery in the UK.
Background and Training
Raised in WA Greg obtained his medical degree at UWA. Following this he spent 7 years training in QLD and WA to become a specialist orthopaedic surgeon. Upon completion of training Greg worked in WA treating a multitude of orthopaedic conditions. These including traumatic and sporting injuries, hip and knee arthritis with joint replacements, and shoulder and upper limb conditions such as rotator cuff tears and carpal tunnel compression.
Greg then spent two years abroad undertaking international sub-specialty neurosurgical and orthopaedic fellowship training in spinal surgery at Oxford University Hospital, The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London, and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square London. He also completed focused training in New York and Switzerland to further enhance his knowledge.
Research and Teaching
Greg is the Director of Spinal Surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital Orthopaedic Department, focusing on delivering surgical training and teaching to doctors training to be surgeons. Greg has lectured in spinal and orthopaedic surgery at the three medical schools in Western Australia and is an Associate Clinical Professor at Curtin University. He has ongoing involvement in many research projects aimed at improving the treatment of spinal conditions, working with research departments worldwide, including Oxford University Hospital, University College London, and The University of Western Australia. Patients under his care may be offered to participate in trials or long-term spinal health monitoring.
