Mitcham Private Hospital would like to introduce Mr Mark Barit who obtained his undergraduate dental qualification at the University of Melbourne for dentistry and medicine 1999 and 2005, respectively.

Mark has worked in many hospitals in Australia and overseas in the UK. He received his oral and maxillofacial surgery training through the Victorian Training Program, involving rotations through various Melbourne Hospitals (The Royal Dental Hospital, The Alfred Hospital, Austin Hospital, Royal Children’s Hospital, Southern Health, and The Royal Melbourne Hospital). Mark then undertook a clinical fellowship in oral and maxillofacial surgery at University Hospital Aintree and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, in Liverpool UK.

During this time, he worked with various subspecialty oral and maxillofacial units including: the head and neck oncology and reconstructive team, the cleft /craniofacial and facial deformity teams. Additionally, Mark was heavily involved in the management of numerous facial trauma cases which were managed by the maxillofacial surgery unit.

Apart from Marks’ general oral and maxillofacial surgery interests (wisdom teeth, implant surgery, pathology – benign and malignant) his specialisation lies in facial deformities (orthognathic surgery) and management of trauma (facial fractures).

His preferred procedures are the correction of bites and aligning of jaws to produce a functional occlusion, along with the cosmetic gain to their facial shape and smile which also boosts self-confidence.

Mark gets great satisfaction with facial reconstruction following traumatic injuries (motor vehicle accidents, sporting injuries and assaults) to re-establish their pre-injury facial shape. “It’s very satisfying following surgery when patients walk in and smile and speak with newfound confidence. Especially when someone may have been involved in a road traffic accident or assault, who was initially almost unrecognisable due to their injuries.”
