Dr Gerard Kilian is an Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Noosa. He has a focus on hip, knee and shoulder surgery.
Dr Kilian has an extensive work history which spans more than 20 years of specialised orthopaedic experience. He graduated in South Africa from the University of Stellenbosch and completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Cape Town in 1996. He was selected for a local travelling fellowship in his final year of training which he completed presenting his research papers at the National congress.
Dr Kilian then moved to Scotland with his wife Leanne where they raised their family. He worked in the NHS for 15 years. He performed a high volume of joint replacements, also working at a regional treatment centre undertaking waiting list reduction work, performing mainly hip and knee replacements.
In Scotland Dr Kilian pursued an interest in improving patient care and medical excellence, which led to him working as an associate medical director as well as an advisor to the Scottish government. He played an active role in teaching as an honorary clinical lecturer at the university on Aberdeen. He also worked in the medico-legal field.
Dr Kilian moved to Australia in 2011 working in Rockhampton and Gladstone and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. Whilst working in Central Queensland he was the acting director of orthopaedic services at Rockhampton where he set up the present telehealth service which went on to receive a state award. He was also the clinical lead for the UQ rural medical school. Dr Kilian became a certified independent medical examiner and he continues to pursue an active interest in medical legal work.
Dr Kilian has interests in refining and optimising surgical outcomes in patients undergoing joint replacements as well as improving their experience and helping them manage their expectations. He also provides a trauma service out of Noosa Hospital for appropriate patients. He does not perform spinal surgery. Dr Kilian uses new techniques such as tissue sparing anterior hip surgical approach, bone preservation surgery and technology such as computer navigation to improve outcomes. He also uses the patient partner programme for knee and hip replacement patients which is a new development run by 360 Med Care from Sydney.
Dr Kilian regularly travels to meet with and operates with leading surgeons. In addition to hip, knee and shoulder surgery, he undertakes endoscopic carpal tunnel releases and minimally invasive bunion surgery.
