Dr Michael Phegan is a Queensland trained orthopaedic surgeon, with an interest in conditions affecting the foot and ankle. His interest in this region of orthopaedics encompasses all aspects including sports injury, corrective surgery as well as the management of arthritis through the employment of fusion techniques and joint replacement.
Dr Phegan completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2011 and began his medical journey here on the Gold Coast where he stayed for his formative years cultivating an interest in all areas of orthopaedics. He completed his orthopaedic training travelling to a number of centres across the far north and South East of Queensland attaining his FRACS in 2021.
Dr Phegan completed a year long fellowship under the supervision of prominent Sydney based surgeon Dr Andrew Wines. During this time, he was also exposed to the teachings of Dr Kim Slater, Dr Les Grujic and Dr Peter Lam. This fellowship exposed him to all aspects of foot and ankle including joint replacement, deformity correction, both open and minimally invasive as well as the management of sports injuries.
Dr Phegan maintains his role within the public sector in his role as a staff specialist for the Gold Coast Hospital and Health District, offering not only expert care in foot and ankle, but also in the management of general and complex orthopaedic trauma in both paediatric and adult populations. He finds that this role is rewarding not only in its complexity but also because it affords him the ability to educate hospital based junior doctors, nurses, and allied health and to offer mentorship to those who are hoping to head down the surgical pathway.
Dr Phegan has recently joined Dr Simon Platt’s Coast Foot and Ankle group. He is excited to live and work on the Gold Coast, with his wife and two young children.
