Belinda Leong is an Ophthalmologist with an interest in cataract surgery and medical retinal subspecialist. Belinda Leong is an Ophthalmologist with an interest in Medical Retina diagnosis and management of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy and other macular disorders.
After completing ophthalmology residency at Sydney Eye Hospital, she undertook a Medical Retina fellowship based in Sydney. This was followed by a Medical Retina Fellowship at the John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford where she managed the Oxford Eye Hospital diabetic retinopathy clinic for a period of time, taught cataract surgery and was heavily involved in educating medical students. She assisted in updating the ophthalmology curriculum for the University of Oxford, setting the ophthalmology component of the medical students’ clinical exam and was an examiner. She was subsequently awarded the Oxford Eye Hospital Bron Award for clinical excellence.
She was then the LuEsther T Mertz Retinal Fellow with Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York under the tutelage of Professor Lawrence Yannuzzi and K. Bailey Freund. This was followed by further research in the laboratory of Professor Christine Curcio at the University of Alabama, Birmingham in age-related macular degeneration.
Belinda has presented at multiple international research conferences, reviewed and published in peer reviewed journals. She has been involved in clinical trials of medical treatments for retinal conditions, diagnosing and managing macular diseases including age-related macular degeneration, central serous chorioretinopathy and diabetic retinopathy. She is a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the International Retinal Imaging Society. Belinda’s interests include age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions, macular disorders and teaching. As a cataract surgeon, she has a special interest in optimising surgical outcomes for medical retinal patients.
