Dr George Touma is an Australian trained Cardiologist with dual training in medicine and pharmacy. He has undergone sub-specialised training in interventional cardiology, with a focus on coronary arterial intervention.
His aim is to provide expert cardiology services to the South and Western suburbs of Sydney. Dr Touma commenced his career with a Bachelor of Pharmacy, achieving First Class Honours. He also won the coveted 'University Medal' from the University of Sydney as the university's highest academic achiever.
Following a period in community and hospital pharmacy he went on to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Sydney. His internship was completed at Nepean Hospital and his physician training was completed at Concord and Nepean Hospitals. His advanced cardiology training was completed at Nepean Hospital and his interventional cardiology fellowship was completed at St George Public Hospital, Kogarah.
Dr Touma has performed over 2000 coronary interventions and is a specialist radial operator. He is expertly trained in complex PCI including left main, bifurcation, rotablator and chronic total occlusions. IVUS and OCT imaging modalities are frequently used. FFR or pressure testing is a dominant feature of practice to ensure that a stent will be beneficial for you.
Dr Touma has particular expertise in stent biomechanics and design allowing him to choose precisely the right stent for your coronary blockage. He has a keen interest in calcified lesion management and use of the rotablator and shockwave lithotripsy. In fact, Dr Touma performed the first coronary shockwave lithotripsy procedure in Australia. This allowed a patient with symptomatic severe coronary ischaemia to be treated with complete resolution of symptoms. She was turned away by other specialists due to age and risk - we were able to obtain and excellent result.
He has a specific interest in treating coronary bypass graft disease and coronary artery disease in the very elderly.
Dr Touma will ensure ONLY necessary coronary stents are implanted for coronary disease. Not all blockages need to be treated with stents and I can explain all these complex issues during the consultation.
