Dr Stuart Butterly is Specialist Cardiologist with a interest in treating complex and previously untreatable coronary artery disease, and a passion for distal radial artery access for coronary angiography and stenting. He is a registered CT coronary angiogram specialist.

Stuart completed his Physician training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital before undertaking advanced training in Cardiology at the Princess Alexandra and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals in Brisbane. He then undertook two years of Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Western Australia.

Stuart’s fellowship training exposed him to a high volume of interventional cardiology procedures including complex cardiac intervention, acute emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (i.e. emergency intervention for heart attack), advanced multimodal coronary imaging, structural heart and valve intervention and novel invasive therapies for resistant hypertension.  Additionally he was introduced to early structural heart interventions for aortic valve stenosis and mitral valve regurgitation.

In pursuit of minimally invasive techniques, Stuart is one of a few people in Australia who perform coronary angiography and interventions predominantly via the the distal radial artery (base of thumb).  In addition to his structural heart treatment, he has a special interest in treating complex coronary artery disease that was previously considered untreatable using the latest techniques and equipment.

Stuart is a keen researcher, publishing on a variety of topics in Australian and international medical journals and is involved in ongoing trials of therapies and devices.

Stuart fell in love with the Sunshine Coast after being rotated to Nambour General Hospital early in his training. After completing his training in Brisbane and Perth with an interventional cardiology fellowship, he returned to paradise to take up cardiology consulting at various local hospitals and now is a director of Heart HQ.

Stuart is committed to providing patient focused, evidence-based care for his patients and consults at Heart HQ's rooms at Sippy Downs, The Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital (Birtinya), Tewantin and Gympie.
