Dr Peter Hinchcliffe is a comprehensive Ophthalmic Surgeon. A graduate of the Flinders University of South Australia’s Medical School, Peter completed his ophthalmic training at Sydney Eye Hospital and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in 2003. He holds a Masters of Public Health from the University of Sydney. In 2005, Peter established Tamworth Eye Centre. Tamworth Eye Centre moved into purpose-built rooms at 136 Marius Street in 2010. The practice has state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, laser for anterior and posterior segment surgical treatment and a well-equipped procedure room for minor surgical procedures. There is ample off-street parking with easy wheelchair access. Peter is involved in undergraduate medical training, postgraduate medical and nursing education and in-community awareness events.

Peter is interested in all aspects of rural ophthalmology, covering neonatal, paediatric and adult eye care. His major surgical interests are cataract, pterygium, eyelid plastics and lacrimal drainage surgery, glaucoma and childhood strabismus. In addition, Peter provides rooms-based management of medical retinal diseases (such as macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions and diabetes). He travels regularly to Moree for consultations and surgery and has a strong interest in indigenous eye care. 

Peter and his highly trained staff are passionate about delivering personalised care and advanced treatments to our community for sight-threatening eye diseases. Being able to perform advanced ocular treatments locally minimises the need for patients to travel further afield for eye care. This benefits patients and their carers and supporters with less travel; less time away from work, family and friends; and lower out-of-pocket expenses.
