Waverley Private Hospital would like to introduce Dr Kaihan Yao (Kai), an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in foot and ankle surgery, as well as knee replacement surgery. His sub-specialty interests include total ankle replacements, minimally invasive bunion and foot surgery, and robotic-assisted knee replacements.
Kai graduated from Monash University with Honours in Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery. He then furthered his postgraduate education, achieving a Diploma in Surgical Anatomy and a Certificate in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Melbourne and the University of Newcastle, respectively. Kai completed his orthopaedic training across multiple metropolitan and regional Victorian hospitals. In 2023, he was awarded fellowship to both the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Following his qualification as an orthopaedic surgeon, Kai pursued sub-specialty training at high volume surgical centres to advance his knowledge and skills on total ankle replacements, minimally invasive foot surgery, as well as robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery.
Kai has published multiple academic articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and was also invited to co-author a book chapter in the Chapman’s Comprehensive Orthopaedic Surgery textbook on Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (a nerve entrapment syndrome in the foot). In addition, he has also had the privilege of presenting at several national and international conferences on topics he is passionate about – including techniques for complex total ankle replacement, as well as the peri-operative management of patients undergoing hip and knee replacements.
