Clinical Practice Mr Tom Shannon is Specialist Urological Surgeon who is an impassioned advocate of men’s health with over 15 years’ experience as a high volume prostate cancer surgeon. He has advanced training in MRI, prostate biopsy, robotic surgery and brachytherapy and is the pioneer behind WA’s first dedicated Prostate Clinic, which aims to be a centre of excellence in prostate cancer treatment. Mr Shannon heads a multi-disciplinary team that includes a specialist Prostate Cancer Nurse, dietician, exercise physiologists, continence advisors, psychologists and a sexual health physician to ensure patients receive the individualised care and attention they need at every stage of their treatment. Using the da Vinci Xi surgical robot at Hollywood Private Hospital, Mr Shannon has achieved excellent patient outcomes in the treatment of prostate cancer, including an earlier return to work and improved prospects for retaining potency and continence.
Background and Training A graduate of the University of Western Australia, Mr Shannon completed his Fellowship in Urology in 1999. He undertook additional post fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery in the UK and USA. On his return, Mr Shannon was among the first surgeons in Australia to perform keyhole surgery for kidney cancer, reconstruction, transplantation, and partial kidney excision for small tumours. He has expertise in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery with over 1500 surgical cases performed to date.
He has been a board member of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (WA) for over 10 years and serves on the boards of the WA Urological Research Organisation and ECU Exercise Medicine Research Institute. Mr Shannon continues to be involved in teaching and research, having presented at local, national and international meetings. He is a surgical teacher for UWA, and mentors students during their final year studies.
