Mr Simon Lau is a Melbourne based Orthopaedic surgeon with a focus on upper limb surgery of the shoulder, elbow and wrist. He performs shoulder arthroplasty (anatomic and reverse) using 3D templating software and patient specific instrumentation, arthroscopic sports surgery of the shoulder, elbow and wrist including rotator cuff repair, as well as surgery for trauma to both upper and lower limbs in adults and children. Born and raised in Melbourne, Simon attended the University of Melbourne to study medicine. Upon graduating, Simon gained a position on the Australian Orthopaedic Association’s Victorian training program, and rotated throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria as an accredited registrar. As a surgeon, Simon has also undertaken subspeciality upper limb training. He completed Professor Richard Page’s Upper Limb Fellowship in Shoulder, Elbow and Wrist surgery in Geelong, which included an academic research component. From there, he travelled to Zurich, Switzerland to work as a fellow under Professors Christian Gerber and Karl Wieser at the Universitätsklinik Balgrist – a world class centre that has been at the forefront of shoulder surgery for the past 30 years. Whilst in Europe, he also undertook a visiting fellowship with Professor Pascal Boileau – one of the pioneers of shoulder arthroplasty and instability surgery. Simon maintains a public practice at Peninsula Health and is a supervisor of training orthopaedic registrars. He has a strong academic record and has published multiple peer reviewed articles on a variety of traumatic and upper limb topics. He is also an invited reviewer for a number of academic journals. Outside of work, he enjoys swimming, tennis and running – whether it be for fitness or after his three young children.
