Dr Michael Murray is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist. He has 15 years’ experience as a specialist in gastroenterology practice. He completed Medical School at the University of Queensland and following this gained specialist qualification in 2003 with the Royal Australian College of Physicians.
In addition to general gastroenterology training, he completed further subspecialty training in Interventional Endoscopy, initially at Westmead Hospital in Sydney and subsequently at the University College Hospital in London in 2004. He practised in Hobart from 2005 until the end of 2009 and has been on the Gold Coast since 2010. His consulting rooms are at Pindara Private Hospital.
As well as the general gastroenterology problems, which include: gastrooesophageal reflux, bowel cancer screening, Crohn’s and colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and treatment of haemorrhoids, Dr Murray specialises in Interventional Gastroenterology, which includes non-surgical (minimally invasive) endoscopic techniques. These include Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) to manage biliary and pancreatic diseases e.g. jaundice due to gallstones, pancreatitis and also cancer in these organs; Endoscopic Mucosal Resection which involves removal of oesophageal and stomach tumours and large precancerous colonic polyps and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), a technique particularly important in the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the intra-abdominal organs, including diagnosis and biopsy of pancreatic cysts and tumours, as well as interventions for pain and drainage involving the biliary system and pancreas. Dr Murray also performs Radiofrequency Ablation for Barrett’s oesophagus with precancerous changes. In addition, he now provides a balloon enteroscopy service at Pindara for investigation of small bowel disease and control of haemorrhage from the small intestine.
