Dr Hopkins is an Australian trained General Surgeon with an interest in Upper GI and Bariatric surgery. He has accredited subspecialist training in Oesophago-gastric and Bariatric Surgery. He is an approachable and compassionate person, who puts the quality of life of his patients at the forefront of his treatments. He believes in evidence based practice and working closely with the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best possible outcome for all patients.

Dr Hopkins grew up in New Zealand and completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and a Master of Science by Thesis before moving to Sydney to study medicine. He graduated from Sydney University with Honours in 2007 and undertook his junior medical officer and general surgery training in Central Sydney through RPA and Concord Hospitals.
Dr Hopkins obtained his Fellowship in General Surgery in 2016 and was subsequently accepted onto the highly competitive Australian and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA) post Fellowship program. This involved placements at Bankstown and Liverpool Hospitals in Sydney, and at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He subsequently spent time at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney before relocating to the United Kingdom. There, he worked at the Bristol Royal Infirmary followed by the Greater Manchester Oesophago-Gastric Service at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. He contributed to the highest-volume oesophago-gastric cancer service in the UK whilst also undertaking bariatric and complex benign cases.
Dr Hopkins has a passion for education and teaching, as shown through his current public appointment as Surgical Superintendent and Staff Specialist at St George Public Hospital, where he oversees the training of junior surgical trainees within the Southern Surgical Skills Training Network, while also completing his on-call commitments.
