Dr Shiraev completed a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) before undertaking his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (First Class Honours), during which he developed his interest in vascular surgery. Dr Shiraev followed these with a Masters in Medicine/Surgery. He undertook specialty vascular surgical training at several units across Australia, including St George Hospital, Canberra Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, Royal North Shore and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals.
Dr Shiraev was awarded his Fellowship in Vascular Surgery by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, before undertaking a fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in order to further specialise in open and endovascular thoracoabdominal surgery, especially in the setting of aortopathies.
Dr Shiraev now consults as a vascular and endovascular surgeon at Royal Prince Alfred, Tamworth, and the Mater Hospitals.
Dr Shiraev has a special interest in research, having been awarded multiple research scholarships. Dr Shiraev has over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations, and one book.
Dr Shiraev has a specific research interest in aortic surgery, which was the focus of his Masters of Medicine/Surgery. He is currently enrolled in a PhD at The University of Sydney examining the phenotypes and outcomes of genetic aortopathies.
Dr Shiraev is heavily involved in teaching medical students, junior doctors and trainee vascular surgeons, both at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Notre Dame, where he is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer.
