Dr Jeevaka (Jay) Amaranath is an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in shoulder and elbows, with national and international fellowships in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the upper limb. He provides a patient centred model of care that incorporates the individual’s needs and expectations together with the most up to date treatment options.

Jay completed his first upper limb fellowship at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group with A/Prof Greg Hoy and A/Prof Eugene Ek. During the fellowship he gained extensive experience in the treatment of elite sport related injuries of the upper extremity (using arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques), shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, along with complex upper limb trauma.

The following year he undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in Europe at the internationally renowned Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. Under the mentorship of one of the pioneers of shoulder surgery Professor Christian Gerber and A/Prof Karl Wieser he gained further experience in advanced techniques involving 3D modelled patient specific shoulder arthroplasty, tendon transfers and complex shoulder arthroscopy. 

During this period, he also spent time as a visiting upper limb fellow at Rennes University Hospital in Rennes, France and The Shoulder Unit at Santy Orthopaedic Centre in Lyon, France. Here he observed the latest techniques in shoulder surgery, such as the use of virtual reality technology for total shoulder replacements from two of the leading upper limb surgeons in Europe, Dr Philippe Colin and Dr Lionel Neyton.

Living and working in Europe provided a unique access to a wealth of knowledge, modern techniques and different approaches in upper limb surgery. These allow him to offer his patients a high standard of care and clinical judgement.
